Accelerate Smart Cities in Africa with us!

Smart Cities are cities that use digital technologies, for example to improve the operational efficiency of a city, promote economic growth, or improve the quality of government services. This can include areas such as infrastructure, environmental measures, transport and mobility, health care, urban planning and much more. Thus, smart cities and communities can play an important role in sustainable development.

African cities embrace technology

On the African continent, smart cities are on the rise as several countries, are rolling out large-scale pilot projects on a greener and smarter urban future. Especially Rwanda has not only set itself the goal of establishing the country as a pan-African hub for digital innovation, but also aspires to be the champion in the field of smart cities as part of the Smart Africa Initiative. Here, Africa´s future is already happening.

Strengthen local innovation for smart cities

In collaboration with private companies, the Special Initiative on Training and Job Creation and Make-IT in Africa have set up the Smart Cities Innovation Programme (SCIP) for Rwandan and other African tech startups. The programme strengthens local innovation for smart cities and communities while building networks with international business partners. We are happy to announce that Siemens, Volkswagen and Sparkassenstiftung are already on board! We are looking forward to great collaboration. A total of 30 startups, selected by a jury of independent experts, participate in the programme to further develop their solutions for the areas of smart housing, smart mobility, and fintech for affordability in smart cities and increase their market reach and investment readiness. Ultimately, the programme will strengthen these selected startups as well as their surrounding ecosystems, creating opportunity for business expansion and the creation of new jobs in Rwanda and beyond.
