Wastezon’s e-waste business model works for both the household and reprocessing target groups in Rwanda: With the help of an app, individuals can put their electronic waste up for sale, accompanied by pictures and a suggested price calculated by the app. Using GPS location services, the app connects with possible purchasers in the area. The purchasers then pick up the old devices and pay with mobile money. Their model has huge potential: Only 20% of the 130,000 tonnes of electronic waste produced in East Africa every year is collected and recycled. Instead, a large proportion of e-waste is illegally disposed of, creating environmental issues.
