MeshPower and Xpower’s smart microgrids lower the cost of providing electricity to off-grid communities. The start-up Xpower combines low-cost DC connections for households, high-power AC connections for businesses and industry, and WiFi hotspots to provide internet access for all. This approach is up to 10 times cheaper than traditional grid expansion, whilst still providing the power for economic development. MeshPower, Xpower’s local operating company, currently manages 69 grids serving over 2000 households, making MeshPower the largest microgrid provider in the country. The government of Rwanda has ambitious electrification targets, and Meshpower plans to contribute significantly with their microgrids.
