Only 40% of all municipal waste in Lagos is collected, and of this, a maximum of 13% is recycled every year. However, the start-up Wecyclers has implemented an incentive-based model for tackling the plastic crisis: Low-income households sign up to the service and begin to separate their recyclable plastic items. Once a week, the Wecyclers team collects the plastic waste using their fleet of bikes (some motorised) and vans. For every recycled kilogram of waste, households receive points which can be redeemed for electronic or household goods, access to education or even money. The plastic waste is then sold to recycling companies.
