To minimise the social barriers arising from visual impairment, oPerception has developed an app that enables visually impaired people to live more independently with the help of their mobile phones. Using the mobile phone camera, the app scans users’ surroundings, recognises individual objects (e.g. fruit, cups, glasses or different currencies) and voices what it recognises, turning the smartphone into talking magnifying glass. The app’s algorithm enables users to add their own objects and also recognises objects that are poorly positioned or visible. To make it easier for users to find their mobile phone, the app also recognises users and signals its position.
