M-SCAN has developed a portable ultrasound scanner which consists of a sounding probe and software which can be loaded onto any smartphone. Using the ultrasound device, doctors can immediately examine and interpret images of unborn children on their smartphone screen. Ultrasound devices are very rare in Uganda, and pregnant women in rural areas must often travel great distances for check-ups – paying for both transport and doctor’s fees. The mobile device is especially helpful in remote regions because traditional ultrasound devices cannot be transported there, and typical ultrasound energy requirements are too high for these areas.
