Despite Kenya’s role as East Africa’s digital pioneer, 70% of Kenyans still do not have access to IT training and many computers sit unused. Lumen Labs thus built the first scalable technology platform for project-based education in Kenya. The software allows students to use SMS mobile surveys to collect data around a local challenge. Teachers can then access the data on an app, and use it to guide students through project-based education. Students thus learn how to evaluate information and develop their own solutions to local problems. Organisations can also access the collected mobile data to improve understanding of their own impact.
