Most households in African countries still prepare their food over open fires. This produces toxic gases that can have a massive impact on health, particularly among women and children living near these open fires. Open fires also consume enormous fuel resources and contribute to climate change, a particular threat for many countries in sub-Saharan Africa. The social enterprise Genexe Engineering sells efficient steel stoves for households and professional kitchens, which produce much less soot and smoke and are cheaper, more climate-friendly, healthier and more sustainable in the long term. Genexe Engineering distributes its ovens in Kenya and the neighbouring countries of Rwanda, Southern Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.
