The crowd-sourcing app “FillYaTank” informs users in real time about the availability and prices of petrol, diesel and gas. Despite Nigeria being one of the world’s top oil producers, Nigerian citizens regularly experience fuel shortages. In 2016, some distributors stopped supplying oil in a dispute with the Nigerian government. As a result, drivers can spend hours looking for open filling stations or queuing up for petrol. This is how it works: Users (so-called spotters) are encouraged to report every time they visit a petrol station and provide information about prices, after which they are rewarded with points and small awards in the app. The app’s spotters have created a vibrant community that tracks and monitors fuel prices and supplies, letting app users immediately find out where gasoline is available at what price.
