Despite Nigeria being one of the world’s top oil producers, Nigerian citizens regularly experience petrol and diesel shortages. In 2016, some distributors stopped supplying oil in a dispute with the Nigerian government. As a result, drivers can spend hours looking for open filling stations or queuing up waiting for petrol.
The crowd-sourcing app “FillYaTank” informs users in real time about the availability and prices of petrol, diesel and gas. All content is generated by users. This is how it works: Users are encouraged to report to a petrol station every time they visit a petrol station and provide information about prices (so-called spotters) – they are rewarded with points and small awards in the app. The app’s spotters have created a vibrant community that tracks and monitors fuel prices and supplies. Every user of the app can find out in a very short time where gasoline is available at what price.
