In many Sub-Saharan African countries, embarrassment and fear prevent the majority of adolescents from seeking information about sexual health services and contraception.
The app “Ask Without Shame” wants to provide accurate information about all topics related to sex with its anonymous text message service and hotline straight into the hands of young people in Uganda. This allows them to make their own informed decisions to prevent sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies. The app also features a wide range of information on safe sex, contraceptives and menstrual hygiene.
The anonymity helps to open up without fear of judgment from parents, teachers or peers. Due to the high mobile phone coverage in Uganda, the app is able to reach many young people. Since the launch in 2015 more than 70,000 questions to 35,000 users have been answered.
