Cooked with clean energy!
Millions of households and kitchens in developing countries spend disproportionately large sums of money on dirty fuels such as charcoal and kerosene because they cannot afford clean cooking gas from gas bottles.
The Kenyan start-up “PayGo Energy” wants to address this and has developed a prepaid system for cooking gas. In this way, clean cooking gas should also be accessible to people with low income. With PayGo Energy, households avoid the high cost of buying a full gas cylinder by buying only as much gas as they need to cook.
Users first register with PayGo Energy for a small fee. Afterwards, they receive a gas cylinder with an intelligent valve (Smart Meter). This will only release as much gas as the user has bought before on a prepaid basis. If his gas quota is exhausted, he has to pay by mobile money. The Smart Meter and the gas cylinder of PayGo Energy are also designed to meet the challenges of local infrastructure, especially in informal settlements.
