Innovation in Governance Hackathon

Brainstorming for a better ecosystem

One of the most impactful actions to support the creation of a tech ecosystem in Nigeria also turned out to be the largest hackathon in Nigeria at the time. In collaboration with the Ondo state government in 2018, the Innovation in Governance Hackathon convened to brainstorm recommendations for the creation of state-supported policies that would enable entrepreneurs and small businesses to thrive. The hackathon focused on four thematic areas: agricultural accessibility, business linkages, education, and renewable and clean energy.

Over 240 attendees, including students, software developers, entrepreneurs, creative designers, and players from the education, agriculture, business, policy, and consumer sectors participated. 28 teams were created which explored creative solutions that the Ondo state government could adopt and implement.

Partners in policy development

Make-IT in Africa has made ecosystem strengthening a primary focus of its work in Nigeria. Government plays an immutable role in ecosystem development and the hackathon provided a perfect platform for the organisation to work together with the Ondo state government. While Make-IT in Africa was the lead sponsor, experts from the government helped create a framework for the brainstorming sessions.

The winning ideas were further incubated at the Premier Innovation Hub in Akure to help the teams solidify their business models, provide access to mentors and investors, as well as to work closely with the state agencies responsible for the challenges they created solutions for.

Following the success of the hackathon, Ondo State Government has pledged to establish an Office of Innovation with a focus on Enterprise Development, Human Capital Development, Public Private Partnerships, and Innovation in Governance.
