A is for action: ASSEK provides back-up to supporters of innovation

In 2019, Make-IT in Africa was instrumental in the creation of ASSEK – the Association of Startups and SMEs Enablers of Kenya. The association is committed to representing and empowering the interests of organisations that support the development of the country’s start-ups and SMEs.

In 2020, together with Make-IT in Africa, ASSEK has embarked on a new joint mission to foster the entrepreneurship ecosystem in Kenya. Activities will focus on workshops and seminars to support innovation hubs and enablers to collaborate, as well as exchange and grow knowledge. Topics covered include product management, hub sustainability and fundraising strategies. By the end of the year, ASSEK intends to network up to 100 enablers in Kenya.

Partners in building partnerships

ASSEK found a critical partner in Make-IT in Africa, which is providing funding as well as support in the design and realisation of the association’s planned activities. The partnership also ensures links will be forged to other African hub networks that provide start-up support such as Nigeria’s ISN and Ghana’s GHN.

Through the workshops, new enablers will potentially join ASSEK, thereby improving longevity and clout for the association to continue carrying out its mandate. Ultimately, Kenya’s thriving community of young entrepreneurs and start-ups will also benefit from the shared resources and linkages provided by the growing entrepreneurship ecosystem.
